Although these are completely fictitious flowers, they remind me of a cactus or even tropical plants. Either way, I really like this pattern. Fun and colorful.

After spending hours playing with color and placement I ended up choosing the original first design with a clean white background. Sometimes the simplest design is the best solution.

Day 3: Lines with Personality

I wanted to make a pattern that could easily be adjusted through color to go with whatever illustration or design it was paired with. For example, the black & white could be wrapping paper, the inside covers of a book, paired with stationary as the envelope slip, etc. The colorful design could be used for the same purposes but has more of a party ribbon/confetti appearance and would fit in with a child's birthday aesthetic.

Although I think these are a bit boring for my taste (too clean and dull or something)I do like the way the lines interact and carry on the repeat. My goal for this design was to find a way to make the patterning more fluid and interactive since most of my designs are the same imagery blocked together or stacked. I was also playing off my last design, the Dog Walkers, and wanted to explore connecting imagery with lines.

In order to continue creating work over the summer while I look for a job, I have been keeping myself busy by making an illustration a day (or 2 or 3...). Here is my latest illustration for Concepts class: we were assigned to create a bug inspired vehicle. I illustrated a transportation system based on spiders and their webs. I think the finished piece is really playful and especially like the verticality of the composition.

I Just finished my graduation party invitations! I think the hand lettering and kansas imagery give them a lot of personality.

Buck Rogers Redesign

For Concepts class we redesigned Buck Rogers of the 21st Century (later titled in the 70's Buck Rogers and the 25th Century). I changed the futuristic hero into Bucket Rogers, a squeaky clean defender of the universe. With the help of his bubbly sidekick, Wil-mop Dearing, Bucket battles against intergalactic scum and Killer Kane's evil minions.

Where's Waldo (zombie version)

For Concept's class, we were supposed to take a well known cartoon or animated character and turn them into zombies. I chose Where's Waldo (or Where's Wally in Britain) and now have a lot of respect for the illustrator Martin Handford, who drew not only the crowds of people from every angle imaginable, but was able to compose them in a way that made sense and had some sort of order.

Here's the cover illustration I attempted.

..and here is a detail of the action. Not quite the same as the original Where's Waldo aesthetic, but it was a good exercise.

These are just some fun type experiments with the skit names and RCR title and theme information.

I had fun playing with different ways of positioning the pirate; it's so much more interesting when illustrations interact with the text.

Here's a version for myself with the original color palette. The Rock Chalk advisory board wasn't as thrilled with it as I was (maybe too Halloween-ish), thus the reason for the red and blue scheme seen in the final designs.
